What caused the PTFE and PVDF extended delivery times
Over the past year, the industry has had more allocations than I have seen during my thirty years experience. In the past I have seen sharp price increases, and I have experienced several shortages, and delivery issues as a result of resin allocations coming from resin vendors. This is the very first instance I have seen all these issues at one time.
Polytetraflouroethylene (TFE) and Kynar - PVDF are both on allocation.
These two resins are in short supply. The PTFE Sheeting product PTFE (TFE) and also Kynar-PVDF manufacturing requires a mineral called Fluorspar that is mined in Mongolia and China. The worldwide interest in this mineral has increased significantly, as well as the supply has tightened. PTFE materials have high heat resistance, excellent chemical resistance and incredibly low co-efficient of friction (slippery) and is utilised throughout a lot of purposes from non-stick fry griddles to ptfe tape for personal use. This mineral is the critical raw materials within the manufacturing of fluoropolymers, fluorolubricants and many refrigerants. This increase in demand joined together with general shortage of raw materials has caused a dramatic price increase (almost double within the past year), shortages, and we expect both these factors to continue in the near future.
